A Piece of the Past, Adored and Appreciated

A South St. Paul resident purchased two 1087 Armchairs at a public auction about 25 years ago, and the solid oak armchairs have been treasured and used in her home ever since.

Cass Gilbert selected 75 of these chairs for offices throughout the Minnesota State Capitol. They were manufactured by Marble & Shattuck Chair Company in Cleveland, Ohio. By 1989, only 18 of Gilbert’s original order remained in the Capitol.

The owner, who used to regularly attend furniture auctions and collect antique pieces, told CGS that a love of Minnesota history originally drew her to the chairs. Having taken excellent care of them for over two decades, she is committed to keeping them in good hands. She has reupholstered the seats; otherwise, no major alterations have been made. These sturdy, handsome chairs are in pristine condition.
